Human Resource Development for Better Livelihood and Growth in South Asia

Mr. Khusro Pervaiz Khan, Director General of National Commission for Human Development, inaugurated the training course of “Human Resource Development for Better Livelihood and Growth in South Asia” This training course was organized by SAARC Human Resource Development Centre, Islamabad for one week duration w.e.f. April 21-26, 2014.

About 28 participants including Resource Persons are attending the training course. It include mid-level policymakers/functionaries, master trainers/professionals from government and semi-government organizations working in the areas of better livelihood and growth, entrepreneurship, skill development, economic and social development, human resource development, planning and development, policy advocacy, and governance; researchers and scholars, business persons and entrepreneurs and NGOs/ private sector representatives.

Speaking on the occasion the Director General said that a better livelihood comprises people, their capabilities and their means of living, including food, income and assets. Sustainable better livelihood and growth approaches include a wide range and combination of activities and choices that people make in order to achieve their goals in life. Dependent on their resource base and their understanding of the options available, different categories of households develop and pursue different livelihood and growth strategies. These strategies comprise a variety of income generating activities including small scale entrepreneurships. In most of the rural areas of South Asia region handmade products such as handicraft manufacturing and fruit processing make a major part of household livelihood and growth strategies. DG was at the view that Human Resource Development (HRD) approaches are of vital importance to enhance and polish such strategies in the SAARC region.

Inclusive growth continues to remain a challenge for South Asian economies. The economic growth is considered to be the most important factor for poverty reduction, however, now a consensus has been developed that poverty reduction in itself is also a source of growth.
