Parliamentarian's Consultation on Literacy

The Chairperson of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Ms. Nafisa Shah said that literacy and Non Formal Basic Education should be part of the agenda of Parliamentary Committee on Education to ensure adequate debate and provide priority to this neglected sub sector of education. She said this on the occasion of Parliamentarians’ Consultation on Literacy organized by NCHD and UNESCO in Islamabad Serena Hotel. The major purpose of the consultation was to highlight the role of parliamentarians for the promotion of Literacy in Pakistan and create awareness about the challenges and issues regarding Education For All (EFA) Goals.

The chairperson NCHD also emphasized the need to legislate the allocation of at least 5% of the education budget for Non Formal Basic Education (NFBE) Program and literacy programs in Pakistan.

Ms. Terja Vertenan Director UNESCO explained the situation of literacy in Pakistan in comparison with other countries and the commitments made by Pakistan at the International Forum in this regard.

Representative of Ministry of Education informed about the government’s efforts to enhance the situation of literacy in the country and said that the present government was working with full commitment to achieve the EFA goals. He also said that the new education policy would also be helpful in attaining our objectives regarding literacy.

The parliamentarians are agreed on these lines:

  • We the Parliamentarians from various political parties pledge to work for promotion of literacy, mobilization of masses for literacy.
  • Advocating federal, province and district government to increase budget for literacy.
  • We resolve work beyond party lines to provide education and literacy in Pakistan.

In the end, Begum Shehnaz Wazir Ali, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Social Sector concluded the ceremony by appreciating NCHD’s efforts for bringing together the policy makers and implementers through such events.
