International Volunteers Day...

To mark the International Volunteers Day, National Commission for Human Development along with National Volunteers Movement organized an event. Federal Minister for Youth Affairs Shahid Hussain Bhutto was the chief guest. The day was observed to acknowledge the services of volunteers who devote their time and talent towards strengthening World Scouting Movement.

Chairperson NCHD at this moment highlighted the work done by NCHD volunteers for the development of Pakistan. They helped enroll over 8 million out of schools children in primary education and established over 22,000 literacy centers in which over 2.6 million females got education.

Minister of Youth Affairs addressing at the ceremony said that the ministry would take measures and incentives to increase volunteering rates among under represented groups, the business community and the general public. He distributed awards and prizes to 32 volunteers for outstanding performance while disaster.

Joint Secretary for Youth Affairs Naeem Baig, Secretary of Youth Affairs Nazar Hussain, Chairperson NCHD and various senators were also present at the occasion.

NCHD's Achievements on Literacy
  • 120,263 Adult Literacy Centers were opened (86% were female learners)
  • 2.68 million Adult learners graduated with 90% females.
  • More than 150,000 teachers trained on Adult literacy teaching techniques, and assessment of learning achievements.
  • About 100 civil society organizations including 2,000 professional were trained in Implementation of Literacy Program.
  • 12,000 Literacy Supervisors were trained in Management of literacy centers.
NCHD was awarded with “The International Reading Association Literacy Prize 2006” by UNESCO in recognition of its contributions.
Government of Pakistan declared NCHD the Lead Agency for Literacy in Pakistan.
