The launch of NCHD's Adult Literacy Program on International Literacy Day

Literacy for All

National Commission for Human Development will launch its plan for the implementation of its Adult Literacy Program on the International Literacy Day. According to this plan, NCHD will establish 98,100 Adult Literacy Centers in 134 districts of Pakistan including FATA, FANA, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir in the next three years (2009-12). Through these centers, 2.4 million Adults will acquire basic literacy skills equivalent to grade III and will be able to write simple letters along with simple mathematical calculations.

NCHD's Achievements on Literacy
  • 120,263 Adult Literacy Centers were opened (86% were female learners)
  • 2.68 million Adult learners graduated with 90% females.
  • More than 150,000 teachers trained on Adult literacy teaching techniques, and assessment of learning achievements.
  • About 100 civil society organizations including 2,000 professional were trained in Implementation of Literacy Program.
  • 12,000 Literacy Supervisors were trained in Management of literacy centers.
NCHD was awarded with “The International Reading Association Literacy Prize 2006” by UNESCO in recognition of its contributions.
Government of Pakistan declared NCHD the Lead Agency for Literacy in Pakistan.
