AFHD donated US$ 100,000 to PHDF...

The 35th meeting of the Board of Directors Pakistan Human Development Fund (PHDF) was held in Islamabad on 29 January, 2010 and was chaired by Chairman PHDF Mr. Farrokh K. Captain. Board member of PHDF Dr. Nasim Ashraf also attended the meeting. Board Members NCHD Mr. Shamsh Kassim Lakha, Dr. Musadik Malik, Mr. Rizwan U. Khan, Mr. Asif Saad and Chairperson NCHD Ms. Nafisa Shah also participated.

Chief Executive Officer of PHDF Mr. Zulfiqar Ahmad updated the Board about Endowment Fund and Education, Literacy and Health Programs of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD). The Board was informed that Government of Pakistan has already released Rupees 600 Million for current fiscal year and Rupees 800 Million has been further allocated to achieve the targets of PC- 1 (Human Development Indicators in Pakistan).

He informed that the performance of endowment fund is extremely good in the current economic scenario prevailing in Pakistan and the World. The return during the current year is 21% which is very promising. He also informed that the Chairperson NCHD Ms. Nafisa Shah has very graciously decided to transfer the recent donation of Chief Minister Sindh and M/s. LOTTE Pakistan of Rs 2.5 Million and 8.5 Million respectively to the endowment fund. Ms. Nafisa Shah also thanked American Fund for Human Development (AFHD) for their donation of US $ 100,000.

She requested the board to help build the endowment fund to ensure the sustainability of NCHD. On this occasion a cheque of US$ 100,000 was presented by Dr. Nasim Ashraf on behalf of American Fund for Human Development (AFHD) to the chairman PHDF, Mr. Farrokh Captain. The Chairman PHDF thanked all members of the Boards of PHDF, AFHD and PHDF UK for their continuous support to NCHD for achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) i.e. Education for all and Health for All in Pakistan.

  • 120,263 Adult Literacy Centers were opened (86% were female learners)
  • 2.68 million Adult learners graduated with 90% females.
  • More than 150,000 teachers trained on Adult literacy teaching techniques, and assessment of learning achievements.
  • About 100 civil society organizations including 2,000 professional were trained in Implementation of Literacy Program.
  • 12,000 Literacy Supervisors were trained in Management of literacy centers.
NCHD was awarded with “The International Reading Association Literacy Prize 2006” by UNESCO in recognition of its contributions.
Government of Pakistan declared NCHD the Lead Agency for Literacy in Pakistan.
